It’s finally happened: Instagram has removed the 24-hour upload limit on Instagram Stories! A few months ago, we revealed that Instagram was in the process of removing the time limit, but we learned today that the feature is now available in the latest version of the app (version 22.0 on iOS). Yes, that’s right. You can now upload any photo or video to your Instagram Stories, regardless of when it was taken.

Instagram is implementing an update that will allow users to upload videos or images from their library, regardless of whether they were created in the past 24 hours. Previously, the there was an intermediate solution of resaving the data of the image or video, taking a screenshot or editing it so that it reappears in your library. By doing so, you cheat Instagram because they think you just committed new content to your account.

The great thing about the disappearing story line, developed by Snapchat, was that it made users feel like they could follow a person through time. Because so many people (especially celebrities and influencers) found ways to sabotage the 24-hour limit, Instagram decided to do away with the time limit altogether. However, if you don’t want to completely misinform your followers, Instagram still offers stickers to add as context that allows you to stamp the date the photo or video was originally taken.
Instagram continues to promote short-term sharing
The update follows a pattern of Instagram promoting short-term sharing, as seen in the previous Archive tool, as more users begin posting temporary photos and/or cleaning up their profiles to manage it as a personal homepage. Since “Stories” debuted on Instagram in August 2016, the app has experienced a tremendous growth rate with 200 million daily users as of September 2017. Snapchat’s growth, on the other hand, has slowed since the feature was launched on Instagram.
