How does the calculator work?
YouTube doesn’t pay per view. You get a share of the ad revenue: 55% on long videos, and on Shorts 45% of your share of a joint pool. What you keep per 1,000 views is your RPM. The calculator works it out as views divided by 1,000, times your RPM.
The amounts per country are an estimate based on data from AIR Media-Tech (300 channels, 2025 and 2026), MilX (ad prices per country) and Dynamoi (measured RPM per country). These sources differ from each other, and creators sometimes report amounts far above or below them. There are few figures for Shorts per country, so that estimate is the roughest.
Your topic makes a big difference. In AIR’s analysis, explainer and education channels had the highest RPM and channels for children the lowest, because videos made for children don’t get personalised ads. The month matters too: RPM in January was about a third lower than in November.
When do you make money on YouTube?
- Ads: your channel has to be in the YouTube Partner Program. At the time of writing that takes 1,000 subscribers, plus 4,000 watch hours in 12 months or 10 million Shorts views in 90 days.
- From 1 February 2027, new applicants need 8,000 watch hours in a year or 20 million Shorts views in 90 days. From then on, only channels with at least 10 million Shorts views in 90 days share in the revenue from Shorts.
- Your own RPM then appears in YouTube Studio, under Analytics on the Revenue tab.

Why does one YouTuber earn more than another?
Because of the topic, the viewers’ country, the length of the videos (from 8 minutes there can be ads halfway through), the share of views with an ad and the time of year. Two channels with the same views can earn very different amounts.
